Austria and Italy

In the fall of 1998, Rose, Karlyn Holman and Stan led a group of artists and photographers on a tour of Austria and Northern Italy.   The trip began in Vienna and ended in Venice and was, unsurprisingly, called "Vienna to Venice". This area is one of the most beautiful in the world.

These images are a small sample of the many taken on the trip.

These photographs were taken with a Nikon N-70 and a Nikon 28 - 200 Nikor lens (the photograph of Hallstatt was made with a 18 - 30 mm Sigma zoom lens).

Stan would appreciate comments, suggestions and or questions relative to this presentation. e-mail Stan Edin

Hallstatt, Austria

Just under 50 miles southeast of Salzberg, Austria, one finds the beautiful town of Hallstatt.  The village lies perched between the lake and the foothills of a mountain. Its reflection on the surface of the lake provides an unforgetable image.  Hallstatt's history goes back to 900 BC.  Salt mining became became a lucrative business here early in village history.  This photograph was made with an 18-35 mm Sigma zoom lens at approximately a 20 mm focal length setting.

Flower Market in Hallstatt

In the central square of the village Rose photographed this lovely little flower shop.
Heiligenblut is perhaps one of the most photographed places in Austria because of its position, its attractive church and superb background.  The name means holy blood and legend recalls the story of St. Briccius, who wanted to take a sample of the blood of Jesus from Constantinople back to Denmark He was killed by an avalanche, but later found and buried.  A chapel was erected above his grave and the precious relic was later stored in the parish church of Heiligenblut.  The church was erected by the miners' guild with the help of local farmers between 1483 and 1491 in true Gothic style. Brunico, Italy

This lovely northern Italian town is sandwiched between the Alps and the Dolomite mountains.  It is the gateway to the beautiful Aurina valley which winds up to the border between Austria and Italy.
Just a few minutes from Venice, on the northern edge of the Veneta Lagoon, is the little village of Burano. This little fishing village is known for its lace making and brightly colored buildings. Burano Bridge 10-98 jpeg.jpg (30136 bytes)(click on the image to enlarge)

Venice Gondola in the Rain jpeg.jpg (38624 bytes)(click on the image to enlarge)

Venice

Venice is intriguing in any kind of weather, but it is especially in the rain.  This photograph of a gondola waiting for better weather was taken on one of the narrow canals between St. Marks and the Rialto Bridge.  It was very dark, and even with 400 ASA film the exposure was about 1/30 second at full aperture.
Another photograph of Venice in the rain. This photograph was taken on the Grand Canal just west of the Rialto bridge.  The red of the floral decoration of a canal-side resturant contrasts beautifully with the deep blue covers of the jet-black gondolas.  Gondolas with Flowers 10-98 jpeg.jpg (30903 bytes)(click on the image to enlarge)

Venetian Accordianists 10-98 jpeg.jpg (22465 bytes)(click on the image to enlarge)

Venice

This intinerant accordianist was sitting just outside the Scuola di San Rocco near what is called the Friar's Cathedral in the Santa Croce San Polo section of Venice. His energetic music was a marked contrast from that of the somber bells sounding from the nearby cathedral on a damp and soggy Sunday morning.
Some tourist brave the rain and ride the gondolas through the narrow "streets" of Venice.  Of interest in this photograph is the soft muted light filtering through the partially translucent unbrellas.  Under these conditions even the gondoliers take refuge under an umbrella! Venice

The Piazza San Marco (St. Marks Square) with its incredible St. Mark's Cathedral,  borders the Grand Canal.  Hundreds of Godolas are moored along the canal awaiting the tourists that arrive by the thousands from all over the world. However, a rainy and foggy morning puts a definte damper on this normally bustling commercial activty.
